Live updates from trial of ‘reverend’ accused of Covid breach in Christian tearoom in Gedling

The trial is set to continue on Tuesday (May 24) of a ‘reverend’ who is alleged to have breached Covid-19 restrictions in a Christian tearoom in Gedling. Nottinghamshire Live is reporting from part-two of the case involving The Rev Shaun Everest, who prefers to be referred to by the name ‘Sadama Das’.

Day one of his case got underway on April 7 but was adjourned until Tuesday for the defence case to start. Everest, of Ossington Close, Meden Vale, Mansfield, is defending himself against three allegations, all denied.

The charges are: an alleged Covid-19 breach, where there was a gathering of two or more people not in the same household or bubble, obstructing a police officer and failing to disperse when instructed by acting Inspector Paul Whitehead.

The court heard how police attended the Mustard Seed cafe and bookshop in Main Road. Officers were on an operation set up to deal with Covid breaches when they responded to reports from the public about a gathering at the cafe on November 14, 2020, at 4.45pm, where 49-year-old Everest declined to provide his name and address to officers and then resisted and obstructed PC Craig Bailey when he tried to put him in a police van. The incident was alleged to have happened during lockdown which followed tier three restrictions.

During lockdown everyone was asked to stay at home whenever possible. ‘Non-essential retail’ shut – including places like restaurants, cinemas and leisure centres. But food shops stayed open, as did takeaways and click-and-collect services. Follow our live blog for updates.
